About Summit Jeep WorksHouston's Jeep Specialist

Summit Jeep Works started with one Army veteran, two used 2-post lifts, and a conviction that Jeep owners in Houston deserved a shop that knew the platform as well as they did. Twelve years later, we're still the Slade family shop — just bigger, busier, and with 200+ Jeep builds behind us.

How a Military Mechanic Built Houston's Only Dedicated Jeep Shop

Kevin Slade spent eight years as an Army motor pool sergeant before he ever opened a shop door. His job was keeping HMMWVs and light tactical vehicles running in conditions that would kill a civilian 4x4 in an afternoon — and he learned that the difference between a vehicle that survives and one that doesn't comes down to whether the person who built it actually understood the platform. Not just the part numbers. The platform.

When Kevin separated from the Army in 2009, he came back to Houston and took a job as a service technician at a Jeep dealership. He was there for five years. In that time he became the person the service desk called when a customer brought in a lifted JK that was shaking itself apart at highway speed, or an XJ that someone else had "built" and couldn't get through a parking lot curb. He learned where the mistakes were made. He learned what the aftermarket got wrong. He learned that most shops building Jeeps weren't actually Jeep people — they were truck shops that would take the job.

"I didn't leave the dealership because I was unhappy. I left because I kept seeing what was possible when you actually know the platform — and I couldn't do that work the way it deserved inside someone else's system." — Kevin Slade, Founder

In 2014, Kevin signed a lease on a four-bay shop on Westheimer Rd and bought two used 2-post lifts. He named the shop Summit Jeep Works — named for a granite summit at Katemcy Rocks in Mason County that he and his brother Tyler had climbed on Kevin's personal JK Rubicon the weekend before he signed the lease. The name was a reminder of what the work was actually for.

His first customer was a coworker's neighbor with a JK Wrangler and a death wobble problem that two other shops had "fixed" twice without fixing. Kevin diagnosed it in 45 minutes on the rack — worn track bar drop bracket, incorrect caster after the lift, and a tie rod end the previous shop had left loose. He fixed it correctly, aligned it, test-drove it at highway speed, and sent it home. That customer has brought in four Jeeps since.

The Family Joins In

Kevin's younger brother Tyler had been working as a commercial electrician since finishing trade school. In 2015, Kevin called him to help wire a custom dual battery system on a customer's JL — a job that required someone who actually understood amperage and proper termination, not someone who'd watched YouTube videos. Tyler spent one day in the shop and told Kevin he was coming to work for him.

Tyler joined Summit Jeep Works full-time in 2016 and became the shop's electrical specialist. When the JL Wrangler launched in 2018 with its full suite of ADAS systems, Tyler was already deep in the documentation — learning exactly what recalibration required and building the equipment capability before the platform became common enough that other shops were scrambling to figure it out.

Kevin's wife Maria came on full-time in 2020. She'd been handling the shop's books and scheduling part-time since 2017, and when volume reached the point where Kevin couldn't run the back of the shop and the front of the house simultaneously, Maria took everything front-of-house. She built their Google Business presence, implemented the customer follow-up system, and is the direct reason that a shop Kevin once described as "bad at being a business" now runs on time and has 127 five-star reviews.

"Kevin calls it a Jeep shop. What it actually is — is a shop full of people who drive Jeeps and treat every build like it's going to Katemcy Rocks, because half of them do." — Tyler Slade, Electrical & ADAS Specialist

In 2018, Kevin brought on Jesse Dominguez — a former dealership tech who'd spent years doing axle work on the side in his driveway because no shop in Houston would let him rebuild a Dana 44 the right way. Jesse joined Summit Jeep Works as the shop's drivetrain specialist. He handles regears, locker installs, axle rebuilds, and the SYE work on XJ and TJ builds that requires someone who has taken those components apart enough times to know exactly what they're doing.

Summit Jeep Works is a Slade family business — but the Jeep community is its real family. The customers are oilfield workers, weekend wheelers, rock crawlers, overland travelers, and parents who bought their kid a Jeep and want to make sure it's built right. Some of them have been coming since 2014. Some of them are the adult children of people Kevin built Jeeps for a decade ago. That's the part that means the most.

Kevin Slade, founder of Summit Jeep Works

Kevin Slade

Founder · Summit Jeep Works

Kevin Slade

Founder & Master Technician

8 years US Army motor pool, 5 years Jeep dealership tech, 12 years running Summit Jeep Works. Specializes in suspension geometry, axle work, and Jeep-specific diagnostics. Drives a built XJ Cherokee daily. Still does the diagnosis on every death wobble complaint personally.

Who Builds Your Jeep

Five people. One platform. Every person in this shop owns and drives a Jeep. That's not a coincidence — it's a hiring standard.

Tyler Slade, Electrical and ADAS Specialist at Summit Jeep Works Family

Tyler Slade

Electrical & ADAS Specialist

Kevin's younger brother. Licensed commercial electrician who pivoted to automotive wiring in 2016 when Kevin needed someone who actually understood amperage. Tyler handles all dual battery systems, switch panels, winch wiring, and — the one that matters most for JL and Gladiator owners — ADAS recalibration after every suspension geometry change. He was running ADAS recals correctly before most Houston shops knew the acronym. Drives a JL Sahara with a custom electrical system he built himself.

Maria Slade, Operations and Customer Experience at Summit Jeep Works Family

Maria Slade

Operations & Customer Experience

Kevin's wife and the reason this shop runs like a business instead of like a mechanic with a building. Maria handles scheduling, quote follow-up, vendor billing, and every customer touchpoint after the initial conversation. She joined full-time in 2020 and has since built Summit Jeep Works' Google presence from scratch — 127+ five-star reviews are her work. Kevin openly credits her with the difference between being busy and being organized.

Jesse Dominguez, Drivetrain Specialist at Summit Jeep Works Lead Tech

Jesse Dominguez

Drivetrain & Axle Specialist

Summit Jeep Works' first non-family hire. Jesse joined in 2018 after years of doing Jeep axle work in his driveway on weekends because no Houston shop would let him do it correctly in their bays. He specializes in Dana axle rebuilds, regears (Dana 30/35/44), locker installs, SYE conversions, and transfer case rebuilds. If the drivetrain touches the ground, Jesse owns it. He can rebuild a Dana 44 faster than most shops can quote it. Drives a Stage 2 TJ Wrangler — his personal test mule for every spec he recommends.

Marcus Webb, Fabrication Specialist at Summit Jeep Works Tech

Marcus Webb

Fabrication & Custom Work

Marcus came to Summit Jeep Works in 2022 from a custom fab shop in Austin where he'd spent six years building tube bumpers, rock sliders, and custom suspension components. He handles all metalwork — weld-on rock sliders, custom one-off armor, cage tie-ins, XJ unibody stiffeners, swing-out tire carriers, and the bracket solutions that don't exist in any catalog. He's the one Kevin calls when the answer to "does this part exist?" is no. Runs a Stage 3 JK on 37-inch Maxxis TREPADORS.

The Summit Jeep Works Standard

These aren't marketing words. They came from Kevin's first year in business — and they're the reason he still does the same things in the same order he did in 2014.

🎯

One Platform. Deep Knowledge.

We don't build everything. We build Jeeps. JK, JL, Gladiator, XJ, TJ — the full Jeep stack, every year, every trim, done correctly. This isn't a limitation. It's the reason we're better at it than shops that say yes to every vehicle in the lot. Specialization produces expertise. Expertise produces results.

📐

Geometry First, Always

Every build starts with geometry, not parts. Lift height determines caster angle, track bar geometry, driveshaft angles, tire size, and gearing. On a JL it also determines ADAS recalibration requirements. We spec the geometry before we quote the parts — because the parts spec follows from the geometry, not the other way around.

🔧

The Right Way or Not At All

We've turned down jobs where the customer's budget didn't cover doing the work correctly. Kevin's rule since 2014: we don't install anything we wouldn't put on a Jeep we're going to drive. That's cost us jobs. It's also the reason our recall and rework rate is nearly zero — and the reason customers come back.

🛣️

The Highway Test Standard

No Jeep leaves this shop without a highway test drive by the tech who built it. Alignment verified on the rack. ADAS confirmed on JL and JT builds. Post-build road test at highway speed. We are not done when the Jeep comes off the lift. We are done when we've personally verified that it's correct at speed.

📋

Straight Quotes, Full Picture

When you ask what something costs, we quote Stage 1, Stage 2, and Stage 3 — in writing. We tell you what each tier includes, what each tier excludes, and what the gap looks like between where the Jeep is and where you want it to go. No line items that appear after you've already approved the job.

🏠

Community Accountability

When you bring your Jeep to Summit Jeep Works, you're dealing with people who drive Jeeps on the same trails you do, in the same Houston humidity, on the same roads. We see our work in the wild. We know when it holds up and when it doesn't. That's a level of accountability that keeps us honest in a way that a warranty card never could.

12 Years of Building Houston's Best Jeeps

From a 4-bay shop and two 2-post lifts to Houston's dedicated Jeep specialist — here's how Summit Jeep Works grew.

2014

Summit Jeep Works Opens

Kevin Slade leases a 4-bay shop on Westheimer Rd and installs two used 2-post lifts. First job: a JK Wrangler death wobble diagnosis that three other shops had failed to fix. Kevin diagnoses and fixes it correctly in one day. That customer hasn't been to another shop since.

2015

First 50 Builds — XJ Reputation Starts

Word spreads through Houston's Jeep community. Summit Jeep Works completes its 50th build and begins developing a particular reputation among XJ Cherokee owners — the shop that does the unibody work right and knows why the Dana 35 has to go.

2016

Tyler Joins — Electrical Capability Added

Kevin's younger brother Tyler joins full-time as electrical specialist. Dual battery systems, switch panels, and proper wiring harness work become a shop strength. Within a year, customers are coming specifically for electrical builds other shops won't touch.

2017

Expanded to 6 Bays + Hunter Alignment

Summit Jeep Works takes on an adjacent unit, expanding to six bays. Kevin purchases a Hunter 4-wheel alignment machine. No more outsourcing alignments — every lift install now gets factory-spec alignment documented on-site before the Jeep goes home.

2018

Jesse Dominguez Joins — Full Axle Capability

Jesse Dominguez joins as drivetrain specialist. For the first time, Summit Jeep Works can rebuild Dana axles, perform regears, and do full SYE conversions entirely in-house. Stage 2 and Stage 3 build capability solidified.

2020

Maria Joins Full-Time — Business Infrastructure

Maria Slade comes on full-time as operations and customer experience lead. She builds the shop's Google Business presence, online scheduling, and customer follow-up system. The business that Kevin describes as "great at Jeeps, bad at being a business" stops being bad at being a business.

2021

ADAS Recalibration Capability — JL & JT

Tyler completes ADAS calibration training and Summit Jeep Works adds full ADAS recalibration capability for JL Wrangler and Gladiator JT. Every JL and JT lift now includes ADAS recalibration as standard — not an add-on, not an afterthought.

2022

Marcus Webb Joins — Full In-House Fab

Marcus Webb joins from a custom fab shop in Austin, adding full in-house fabrication capability. Custom rock sliders, cage work, XJ unibody stiffeners, and one-off solutions are now completed in the same building where the rest of the build happens.

2024–2025

★★★★★

"My JK had been wobbling at 55 mph for two years. Three different shops 'fixed' it — twice with a new steering stabilizer, once with new tie rods that weren't the problem. Kevin put it on the rack, showed me exactly what was wrong on the lift, explained the track bar geometry issue in five minutes, and had it fixed and highway-tested the same day. First shop that actually understood what was happening."

"Jesse rebuilt my XJ's rear axle from scratch — Dana 44 swap, 4.56 regear, ARB locker. I've watched enough people botch this job to know what the work looks like when someone actually understands what they're doing. Jesse is the real thing. Two months later I took it to Katemcy Rocks and not a single thing moved that wasn't supposed to move."

"Tyler called me two days after my JL lift to confirm the ADAS was reading correctly on the highway. Then Maria called at 30 days to remind me about the fastener recheck — included, no charge. Then Kevin sent a text asking how it trailed at Barnwell. I've never had a shop give a single thought to what happens after I drive out. This one checks three times."
