What the Gladiator JT Actually Is

The Gladiator JT debuted as a 2020 model. It shares the JL Wrangler's front half — same 3.6L Pentastar engine, same axle architecture on comparable trims, same ADAS suite — but the 19.4-inch wheelbase stretch to 137.3 inches changes how it handles, what it can tow, and how every suspension modification works. It is not a JL with a bed bolted on. It is a different vehicle that shares a significant amount of DNA with the JL.

Note on the Mojave: The Mojave is the desert-speed truck — Fox 2.5" bypass shocks, wider axle stance, standard 4.10 gears, and a 1" factory higher ride height for high-speed terrain clearance. It has a rear locker but no front locker, which is the opposite priority from the Rubicon. For trail/rock work, the Rubicon's Rock-Trac 4:1 and front locker are meaningfully better. For fast fire roads, washboard terrain, and Texas sand — the Mojave's Fox Live Valve shocks are a legitimate advantage.

Gladiator JT: 6 Failure Points to Address

The Gladiator is a strong platform. But the longer wheelbase, heavier curb weight, and ADAS systems introduce specific issues that show up after lift installs. These are the six we see most often.

FAILURE 01
Front Driveshaft Bind at Lift Height
Community Nickname: "Driveshaft Death Angle"
The JT's longer wheelbase gives it better factory driveshaft angles than the JL, meaning driveshaft bind is less common at moderate lifts — EVO reports no driveshaft changes required up to 6.5" on their system. But at Stage 2 and above, shock extended length (not just lift height) determines whether the front driveshaft binds at full droop. Shocks with extended length over 28.5" can create bind issues regardless of lift height. This is a spec-by-spec conversation, not a blanket rule.
Fix: Verify shock extended length as part of the lift spec before ordering. Adams Driveshaft or Tom Woods 1350-series custom driveshaft when required. We check droop at full articulation before finalizing spec on every Stage 2+ JT build.

ADAS System Misalignment After Lift
Present on: ALL JT Trims with ADAS
Every JT Gladiator with adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, or rear cross-path detection requires ADAS recalibration after any suspension geometry change. Cameras, radar, and sonar are all calibrated to factory ride height. A lifted JT with un-recalibrated ADAS has safety systems that may not perform correctly — and ReadyLIFT explicitly calls this out in their JT installation notes. This is not a "dealer optional" step. It is required.
Fix: ADAS recalibration included in every Summit Jeep Works JT lift quote — not an add-on, not optional. Zero-point calibration performed post-install before delivery.

FAILURE 03
Track Bar Geometry & Death Wobble
Present on: Lifted JT builds with worn or cheap geometry correction
The JT is not immune to death wobble — the same track bar geometry problem that plagues lifted JKs applies here. Cheap or incomplete lift kits that don't include proper track bar correction, adjustable control arms, and caster geometry correction create the conditions for wobble at highway speed. The JT community has documented this on Sport S builds with worn front end components and inadequate lift installs. The longer wheelbase does not protect against it.
Fix: Every JT lift at Summit Jeep Works includes proper front track bar correction (drop bracket or adjustable), caster correction components, and post-install 4-wheel alignment at ride height. Death wobble is diagnosable and fixable — but properly spec'd installs don't create it in the first place.
FAILURE 04
3.73 Gears Under 35" Tires (Non-Rubicon)
Present on: Sport, Overland, Mojave trims
Sport, Overland, and most non-Rubicon JT trims ship with 3.73:1 axle gears (except EcoDiesel and some High Altitude variants which have 3.73 regardless). At 35" tires, 3.73 gears produce a meaningfully degraded driving experience — slow off-idle acceleration, transmission hunting between gears on the highway, and reduced towing capability below the rated maximum. At 37" tires on a JT with 3.73 gears, you are fighting the drivetrain on every climb.
Fix: Regear to 4.56:1 for 35" tires, 4.88:1 for 37" tires. Rubicon trims with factory 4.10:1 can run 35" tires without regear but benefit from 4.56 at 37"+. We quote regears as part of every non-Rubicon Stage 2 build.

Payload Overload on Overland / Overlanding Builds
The Gladiator Paradox
The Gladiator is the platform Jeep owners choose specifically for self-sufficient overland travel — bed-mounted systems, dual batteries, rooftop tents, refrigerators, onboard compressors, full water storage. The problem: the Rubicon trim has the lowest payload rating of any JT variant at approximately 1,200 lbs. A fully kitted overland Gladiator Rubicon with rooftop tent, water, gear, and two passengers can hit or exceed the rated payload. The Mojave and Sport S Max Tow variants offer 300–500 lbs more payload capacity for the same reason the Rubicon trim doesn't — those trims carry less heavy off-road hardware from the factory.
Fix: Payload audit is part of every Gladiator overland build conversation at Summit Jeep Works. We map the planned gear weight, passengers, and accessories against the trim's rated capacity before speccing the build. Airbag assist for loaded-down builds, tongue weight considerations for trailer setups.

FAD Disconnect Sensor Conflict on Axle Upgrades
Present on: All JT builds with aftermarket front axle work
Every JL and JT Jeep has a Front Axle Disconnect (FAD) — a system that physically disconnects the left and right front axle shafts from each other when the vehicle is in 2WD. This system improves fuel economy and reduces driveline drag on-road. When an aftermarket front axle housing is installed (or a coaxial disconnect delete is performed as part of axle work), the FAD sensor requires disabling via a TAZER Mini or equivalent programmer — or the vehicle will throw persistent fault codes. This is a known consideration on every JT front axle upgrade, not a surprise failure. But shops that don't flag it in advance create an annoying post-build diagnostic headache.
Fix: FAD disable via TAZER Mini or TAZER Lite is quoted and included with any JT front axle housing work. We do not hand back a Gladiator with persistent fault codes from an incomplete axle install.

Which Trim to Buy — and What to Fix First

Every JT trim has a different starting point for a build. Here's what each one brings to the table and what we address immediately.

Rubicon — The Off-Road Starting Point

Factory Rock-Trac 4:1 transfer case, Tru-Lok front and rear lockers, Dana 44 wide-track axles with 4.10 gears, 33" Goodyear MT tires from the factory, electronic sway bar disconnect, and Bilstein monotube shocks. The Rubicon is the strongest starting point for trail and rock work — but its payload rating of approximately 1,200 lbs is the lowest of any JT variant. If you're building an overland rig that will carry serious gear weight, factor that in early.

First steps after purchase: Lift to 2.5"–3.5" with ADAS recal, move from factory 33" tires to 35"+ at current gearing (4.10 works at 35"), armor package, and winch. Regear to 4.56 when moving to 37"+.

Mojave — The Desert Truck

The Mojave gets the Fox 2.5" internal bypass shocks with external reservoirs — the best factory suspension package available on any JT — plus Dana 44 HD wide-track axles, 4.10 fixed gearing, and a Tru-Lok rear locker. No front locker. The Mojave's 1" higher ride height and Fox shocks make it the platform for fast desert and washboard terrain. If you're building a trail and rock rig, the Rubicon's Rock-Trac and front locker are more useful. If you're building an overland/desert truck that sees fast terrain, the Mojave is the more honest starting point.

First steps: Leveling or 2.5" lift with ADAS recal, 35" tires (4.10 gears accommodate 35" well), armor and winch, add front ARB locker if rock capability is part of the plan.

Sport S / Overland — The Value Build Platform

Sport S and Overland trims come with standard-width Dana 44 axles and 3.73 gears — the starting point that needs the most corrective work for a proper build. The good news: Dana 44 axles are still Dana 44s and the platform is solid. The regear to 4.56 is the single highest-priority first modification on any non-Rubicon JT build running 35" tires. At 37"+, 4.88:1 is the correct call. Sport S with the Max Tow package gets the highest payload rating (up to 1,725 lbs) and wide-track axles, which makes it the value overland platform if you can live without the factory lockers.

First steps: Regear to 4.56 (35") or 4.88 (37"+), lift with ADAS recal, ARB lockers front and rear, armor and winch. Budget accordingly — a fully built Sport S with regear, lockers, and lift runs close to a Rubicon build total, but starts cheaper.

EcoDiesel note: The 3.0L EcoDiesel JT has 3.73 gears across all trims — including Rubicon. The diesel's 442 lb-ft of torque partially compensates for the taller gearing at 35" tires, but the Rubicon EcoDiesel still benefits from a regear to 4.10 or 4.56 at 37"+. EcoDiesel builds also get the wide-track Dana 44 regardless of trim.

On cheap lift kits: The JT Gladiator community consistently documents death wobble and degraded handling from incomplete or budget lift kits — particularly those that include cam bolt caster adjustment only (no proper length control arms) and no track bar correction. We do not install kits without proper geometry correction. If a kit doesn't include it, we add it. That is why our quotes may run higher than what you see on forums — and why our Gladiators drive straight at 75 mph after the build.

Suspension

Stage 1: EVO MFG 2.5" coilover, TeraFlex ST2, ReadyLIFT Terrain Flex 4" (4-arm). Falcon 2.1 or Fox 2.0 Performance shocks standard across Stage 1.

Stage 2: BDS long arm, EVO MFG 4.5", Synergy 4.5" Performance, Metalcloak Gamechanger. Fox 2.0 or 2.5 shocks, Bilstein 8100.

Geometry correction (track bar, control arm length, caster) is not optional at any lift height. We include it or the install doesn't happen.

Axle & Drivetrain

Regear: 4.56:1 for 35" tires, 4.88:1 for 37", 5.13:1 for 40"+. Master install kit standard on every regear. Non-Rubicon Sport/Overland: high priority before anything else.

The bed changes the build conversation. The JT's 5-foot steel bed is not a limitation — it is a significant advantage for expedition builds. A Wrangler with a roof rack and rear cargo platform carries the same gear in worse positions. A Gladiator carries it lower, more accessible, and without the aerodynamic penalty of a roof load. We design overland systems around this architecture.

Our take: If the primary build goal is rock crawling, buy the Wrangler. If the primary build goal is overland travel, expedition capability, or using one vehicle for work and trail — buy the Gladiator. Most of our Gladiator customers bought it for the right reasons. The Sport S with Max Tow package has the highest payload (1,725 lbs) if payload headroom is the priority.
The JT is not immune. Every JL and JT has a Front Axle Disconnect (FAD) that separates the left and right front axle shafts in 2WD for fuel efficiency. When aftermarket front axle housing work is performed, this system requires either retention (complex) or disable via a TAZER Mini or TAZER Lite programmer. Without addressing it, the vehicle throws persistent fault codes. Summit Jeep Works includes FAD disable via TAZER as part of every JT front axle housing install. You will not leave with fault codes from an incomplete axle job.
Yes — but the longer wheelbase is a real limitation on the tightest technical lines. The JT Rubicon at 137.3" wheelbase has a lower breakover angle than a JLU at 118.4" at the same lift. It will handle the majority of Texas trail terrain including Katemcy Rocks and most Barnwell Mountain obstacles. Where it runs into trouble is the extremely tight technical lines that a short-wheelbase platform handles naturally — tight switchbacks, very close obstacle sequences. If serious rock crawling is the primary goal, the JK or JL Wrangler is the more honest choice. If the Gladiator is going to do some rock crawling alongside its primary overland mission, it will handle 90% of what the trails here offer.
Command-Trac (NP231): 2.72:1 low range. Standard on Sport, Overland, and Mojave. Adequate for most trail use, but limited low-range reduction compared to Rock-Trac. Rock-Trac (NP241OR): 4:1 low range. Standard on Rubicon. The 4:1 ratio provides 47% more torque multiplication than Command-Trac in low range — this is the difference between crawling slowly and crawling very slowly, which matters on technical rock and steep grade transitions. For trail and overland builds that won't see serious technical rock, Command-Trac is fine. For rock-oriented builds, Rock-Trac or an Atlas upgrade are the correct calls.
The Gladiator's 7,700 lb tow rating (Sport S Max Tow) is a factory number at factory geometry. A lift changes the hitch height, which changes the tongue weight angle on a trailer — and a lifted vehicle towing a trailer at incorrect geometry puts more stress on the hitch, the frame, and the drivetrain. For Gladiators that will tow regularly, we address hitch drop to restore proper tongue weight angle after the lift, and we include a trailer sway control conversation in every Stage 2+ build where towing is part of the use case. Towing capacity is not reduced by a properly installed lift, but geometry matters for safety and wear.
