The KO2 specifically is beloved in the Jeep community for its balance of trail capability and street manners. If 80%+ of your miles are on pavement, an AT is almost certainly the right call.
Mud-Terrain (MT) tires are purpose-built for deep mud, clay, and rock. BFG KM3, Nitto Trail Grappler, and Mickey Thompson Baja Boss are the right call if you're doing serious trail runs at least 2–3 times a month and you're OK with the highway trade-offs. In Houston's clay soil specifically, an MT with open, self-cleaning tread is dramatically better than an AT in deep mud conditions. If you tow, haul, or plan to load your Gladiator bed regularly, your tire's load index is non-negotiable. For most lifted Wranglers and Gladiators, we recommend Load Range E (10-ply equivalent) tires for anything that hauls or tows, and Load Range D (8-ply) as the minimum for any serious off-road use where sidewall puncture resistance matters.
Wheel fitment is more than bolt pattern. There are six specs that determine whether a wheel actually fits safely and correctly on a JK, JL, or Gladiator — and we verify all six before we order anything.
Offset is the distance (in mm) from the wheel's mounting face to its centerline. Negative offset pushes the wheel outward; positive offset pulls it inward. Most lifted Jeep builds run negative offset (-12mm to -25mm) to clear suspension components and give a wider stance. The wrong offset on a JL can cause contact with UCAs or brake calipers.
Backspacing is the distance from the wheel's mounting face to the inner lip. Too little backspacing causes the tire to stick out past the fender; too much causes contact with the inner fender liner or suspension components during full lock. For lifted Jeeps, backspacing is checked against your specific lift and control arm configuration.
The center bore of the wheel must match your hub diameter to be hub-centric. Jeep Wrangler JK and JL share a 71.5mm hub bore. Using a wheel with a larger bore requires a hub-centric ring — without it, the wheel centers on the lug nuts and vibration is the result. We verify hub-centric fit on every install.
All Jeep Wrangler JK, JL, and Gladiator share the 5×127mm bolt pattern. Don't confuse with 5×5 imperial (5×127 and 5×5 are the same) or 5×5.5 (5×139.7), which is a different pattern.
Wheels have load ratings just like tires, and they need to match your Jeep's GVWR — especially if you're carrying gear, towing a trailer, or running a heavy armor package. A decorative wheel built for a car might be rated for 1,500 lbs per corner. A properly spec'd Gladiator wheel needs to handle significantly more. We only carry wheels with appropriate load ratings.
Wheel width determines how the tire sidewall sits — too narrow causes the tire to balloon and reduces sidewall strength. Most 35"–37" Jeep tires are designed to mount on 8"–10" wide wheels. Running a 12.50"-wide 35" tire on a 9"-wide wheel (common for beadlock builds) is acceptable and provides better rim protection on rocky terrain.

On a JL with UCAs, this can cause tire-to-UCA contact during suspension travel. Wrong offset also alters scrub radius, causing the Jeep to pull or feel heavy in the steering. Shops that don't know Jeep geometry bolt on whatever fits the bolt pattern without verifying offset suitability.
Changing wheel offset and/or tire size changes your Jeep's scrub radius and can alter caster and camber angles. Installing new wheels and tires without a post-install alignment check will wear your new tires unevenly within the first 5,000 miles. On a lifted Wrangler, caster correction is already critical — an alignment check after new wheels is non-negotiable.
Under-torqued lug nuts vibrate loose. Over-torqued lug nuts stretch wheel studs. The problem is compounded with beadlock wheels, where the ring bolts need to be torqued to precise spec (typically 7–10 ft-lbs in a star pattern) to clamp the bead evenly. We see beadlock ring bolts that were hand-tightened or air-gunned regularly — both cause de-beading risk at lower trail pressures.
New wheels almost always mean TPMS issues — either existing sensors don't transfer cleanly, the new wheels aren't compatible with your sensor band style, or sensors get damaged during dismount. Driving with a TPMS warning light on means you have no warning if a tire loses pressure on the highway. The JL Wrangler has factory TPMS — we won't hand your keys back with the warning light on.
A 12.50"-wide tire on a 7"-wide wheel creates a balloon effect — the sidewall bulges outward, which looks sloppy and reduces sidewall strength. It also affects the contact patch shape, hurting braking and cornering traction. The general rule is that tire section width should be matched to wheels within about 2"–3" of the recommended mounting width.
Every inch of diameter you add to your tire makes your speedometer read slower than actual speed. On a Wrangler going from 31.6" stock tires to 35" tires, this drift is roughly 10% — you think you're doing 65 mph while actually doing 71.5 mph.
